Consumer drone technology has come a long way in recent years, but nothing beats the original drone seen hovering here. I shot a cover of Torstein Horgmo from that angle and then moved to this ground angle, which produced another cover, this one for Utah's ARKADE magazine.

This jump had been hidden in plain sight for over a decade of snowboard crews filming on this run in Haines, Alaska known formally as "Caffeine". Torstein Horgmo might not have been the first to see it's potential, but he was the definitely the first to make it a reality. This jump capped off the final day of filming for the 2015 Union Binding movie "Stronger" with a two-man session that paired Tor with Dan Brisse. There were basically two A-grade angles to shoot from and I was torn on which to shoot from. Logistically it made sense for me to start in the heli with the film crew and get the aerial angle first, the only risk to that the pilot has final say on the angle despite all the instructions you can give them. Luckily he was able to line up my vision and hold it during the first several goes. After a few goes I was very confident in the shots I'd gotten so far of both guys (Tor's went on to be the cover of Transworld's first issue of 2016). In any session that I feel like I've covered one angle I like to move around and maximize the potential usage of shots from a feature so everything doesn't look the same. It's rare to have another angle that I felt could match something of the quality of what I'd just shot, but I had confidence in this one. After one more aerial shot, we picked up the guys and took them to the top for another go. I jumped out with them and had my board. While they were getting ready I hurried down to this location, which was a little spooky because I was in the vicinity of open crevasses and there was no guide to go first. I wanted to get this round of jumps and I knew the heli was already in the air with the film guys who stuck with that angle. I hauled ass down, didn't even unstrap and pulled my camera out at the first place I stopped. This is the round that Dan went the biggest and the shot you see here. On the follow up jumps he never went bigger and didn't clear the horizon so the shot did not work nearly as well. It was't even close actually. This was pure luck, but I'm glad I hustled down and made them wait for an extra half a minute. This shot could have also been a cover, but Tor's worked better as a vertical, so Dan kinda got screwed. I don't think I've ever had a jump where the feature looked so different and produced results of this quality. It was the best way I've ever ended a season of shooting.
