Jordan Morse's first trip to Japan and we had absolutely perfect snow on this day at a snow cat operation. I had been to the spot the year before and shot the same feature with Devun Walsh and was totally happy with the shots. I mean it's Devun, duh. The thing that kept eating away at me was the lighting, which is notoriously awful in Japan due the fact that it's always snowing. Good problems to have, except not always the most favorable for shooting photos. They tend to start all looking the same with a similar low-contrast look. If I had the chance to do it again, I'd pack a flash and change the vibe of this shot completely. Luckily I did have another chance, just a year later and of course it turned out to be an epic powder again. While Devun didn't make the trip this year, I had Jordan Morse and is young strong knees willing to send it into let's just say, not the steepest of landings. It's not often you get redo's in life, let alone photography, especially with how much conditions change season to season. This was one of those rare instances where it all lined up and the redo produced the exact image I'd imagined. One of my all-time favorites, which feels weird to say about something that hasn't had the benefit of aging and growing on me yet, but I have a feeling this one is going to age very well with me.
