Powder explosions can be sexy, but to call them sexy explosions is reserved for the cream of the crop. Manuel Diaz makes many sexy explosions, perhaps its the Latin in his Chilean roots. In the spring of 2013 we were posted up in Haines, Alaska for weeks when half the crew bailed out, not having much faith in the weather turning around. A few us stayed behind and gave it a roll of the dice, one that turned out to be in our favor. This was the first day the storm had broken, and as is usually the case, there's winds on the back end. Somehow the helicopter was able to fly that day, but not unable to do any technical landings. It was a great day just to go and try and get some powder turns on low-angle terrain. The wind had deposited heavy amounts of snow on certain aspects, making for dramatic powder turns, especially when a gust would catch and carry the spray. This one has the feeling of a big wave and that's no accident. Manuel is a ripping surfer, and surfer's always have the best turns.
